The city is today’s metropolis whose history is fast fading into obscurity now. Although many might not know the whole story about the birth of this beautiful city, Mumbaikars are passionate about their wealthy heritage and past. The true name Mumbai can be an eponym, derived from the true name of an area Goddess called Mumbadevi.

The past history of this beautiful city goes back to the forming of the seven islands, colaba namely, Mazagaon, Mahim, Parel, Bombay Island, Worli and Aged Woman’s Island. This combined band of islands infact formed a part of the kingdom of Ashoka, the famed Buddhist emperor of India. Following a loss of life of the king, the ownership of the islands was offered and they were afterwards colonized by a true number of different rulers.

From the early 19th century, the city went under an enormous reconstruction and in addition experienced a boost throughout the market during the American Civil War. William Hornby, the governor of Bombay, initiated the task in the first 18th century despite severe opposition from the East India Organization. Thereon, the populous city started to take form with several civil engineering projects underway, marking the birth of the Industrial Revolution. The seven islands had been merged into a unitary mass in 1845 finally, and in 1853, the country’s 1st railway connection was achieved between Bombay and Thane.
